Show History
The Galloway Country
Fair was one of the more positive events to result from the Foot and Mouth
crisis in 2001.
Three like minded friends who all had suffered financial losses in their
business realised there was an opening for a quality country fair in Dumfries
& Galloway. Sarge and Jane Sargeant and Micky of WC in Fields pooled their
resources and knowledge of the country fair circuit and outdoor events to form
a partnership and organise a small Fair at Castle Douglas in August 2002 which
attracted 6,000 visitors.
From the first event the GCF has continued to grow with visitor numbers of
around 18,000 in 2009 and now attracting people from all over the UK. After the
third event the fair had outgrown its original site and as it was realised that
a larger site was required not only to accommodate more trade stands and
attractions but also to locate closer to the main road network, these problems
were overcome and we were delighted to be located at Raehills.
Unfortunately, due to his other business commitments, Micky resigned in March
2006 so the Fair continues to be organised by husband and wife team Sarge and
Jane – those of you who know them and have seen their stand at many shows
throughout the UK will understand their commitment to make the Fair an event
not to be missed by offering quality stands, traditional and exciting
attractions but more than anything an enjoyable, entertaining and an
educational family day out.
2010 was the ninth show and the sixth at Raehills and was a great success
despite a couple of very wet years.
The 10th anniversary sees the show move to a new, larger and more exciting
venue being Drumlanrig Castle and Country Estate.
